Retaining one's innocence in a depraved world

A question for conversation: how does one retain one's innocence (purity of heart, as the Catechism calls it) while at the same time becoming aware of the world as it really is (pretty dark). This is a helpful discussion for parents of teenage children. It is a perennial question in our home school group.

Robert, a great question and a great discussion. The first thing to be realized is that there is no innocence to be retained. We are wicked from our mother's wombs. We come into the world selfish and corrupt and we saved by the grace given in Christ's atoning death on the cross. After that, it is not about retaining innocence but about becoming a disciple of Jesus.
