Pleasure and pleasing God

is a comment I made at at HMS, which includes a quote from St. Alphonsus Liguori.

I suppose that this sin needs to have some formation on the part of the sinner. Otherwise, how would the person know what is pleasing to God? Seems like there are a lot of folks that hardly know God at all.

In "On Free Choice of the Will," St. Augustine says that sin occurs when one prefers a lower, created good to a higher good; especially the highest, uncreated good, God. It sounds like this is what St. Ligouri has in mind.
